Microsoft 365 Copilot
The AI assistant in M365 apps — helps individual users: summarise email threads, draft documents, recap missed meetings, analyse data in Excel. Per-user licence. Value is personal productivity. Deployment: enable the licence, done.
Copilot Studio agents
A platform for building custom AI agents for specific business scenarios: HR policy agent, IT helpdesk agent, sales information agent, procurement portal agent. These serve many users, are designed for one domain, and integrate with specific business systems.
The decision
Use M365 Copilot when the goal is improving individual productivity across M365 for general tasks.
Use Copilot Studio when you have a specific business process to automate, need an agent with access to specific business data, or want to serve many users with a consistent governed AI experience.
M365 Copilot makes knowledge workers more productive. Copilot Studio agents handle specific business tasks at scale. They are complementary, not competing.
When a client asks about deploying Copilot, my first question is always: what business problem are you trying to solve? The answer determines which tool they need.
